Welcome to the New Mexico Geographic Information Council, Inc. (NMGIC), a non-profit dedicated to things geospatial: education, information sharing, technology advancement, and collaboration in the state of New Mexico.

NMGIC has several hundred paid members drawn from people in all walks of life - public, private, NGOs, corporate, educational institutions - professionals and students. We joined NMGIC to learn from each other. Please join us, too! Registration Form


Four Students Awarded NMGIC "SWUG Scholarships"

Four students at New Mexico higher education institutions were awarded $1500 NMGIC "SWUG Scholarships", which will help them attend the upcoming SWUG Meeting in Arizona.


  • Michael Wine, NM Tech - "Long-term streamflow relations with riparian gallery forest expansion into tall grass prairie in the Southern Great Plains, USA"

  • Su Zhang, UNM Geography Dept - "Geographic masking using location swapping to protect confidentiality of individual-level data"

  • Michael Camponovo, UNM Geography Dept - "Robustness of Kernel Density Crime Hot Spot Maps"

  • Erin Marchand, UNM Geography Dept - "Using Nation-wide Imperviousness Data to Model Population Growth"


2011 NMGIC Fall Meeting

NMGIC's Fall 2011 Meeting was held on Friday, October 28th, 2011 in Albuquerque at the Science & Technology Park Rotunda. There was also a Workshop on the previous day, Thursday October 27th. Approximately 90 people attended the meeting; the topic was "What can you do with Free or Public-Domain Data?". Also, new members of the NMGIC Board of Directors were elected (Lisa Arnold, Kenny Calhoun, and Daniel Paulsen), and Leland J.S. Pierce was re-elected to another term.


2011 NMGIC Spring Workshop and Meeting Successful

The Spring NMGIC Workshop and Meeting ("GIS in the Cloud") was held in May 12th & 13th, 2011 in Albuquerque at the UNM Science and Technology Park (801 University Blvd SE). The Workshop by ESRI on ArcGIS v10 was very well-attended and very helpful (and much appreciated). The Meeting on Friday had some useful presentations on GIS in the Cloud from several different prespectives (more to come on this, including links to presentations). NMGIC Membership Fees Increased

The NMGIC, Inc Board of Directors has voted to increase the various membership fees, starting with the current year, 2011. (more ...)

2010 NMGIC Fall Workshop & Meeting


The Fall 2010 NMGIC Workshop and Meeting were held held on October 14th & 15th, 2010 in Albuquerque at the UNM Science and Technology Park Rotunda. Karen Sideralis, Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) for the U.S. Department of the Interior gave the keynote speech for the meeting, which centered on "GIS in the Current Economy". A special "Lightning Round Session" was well-received, as well as the Thursday Workshop on "Open Source & Low Cost Tools" for GIS.

PNM Awardees Honor NMGIC



PNM employees Larry Rose, Gathen Garcia, and Randy Duran, recent recipients of the 2010 PNM Robert M. Price Innovation Award, have honored NMGIC, Inc. with by choosing to direct the $1000.00 Award donation to the New Mexico Geographic Information Council, Inc. (NMGIC). (more ...)

Patterson Awarded JRM Scholarship



NMGIC awarded the 2010 Jessie Rossbach Memorial Scholarship to NMSU graduate student Anna Patterson, for her M.S. work on an arid-environment geomorphological rapid assessment model (more ...)

NMGIC Honors Three for Service & Achievement





Dr. Stanley A. Morain, Dr. Bobby J. Creel, and Rich Friedman, three people long associated with the geospatial community in New Mexico, were presented with service & achievement awards during the NMGIC Spring 2010 Meeting on May 7th, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. (full story here)

Bobby Creel



Bobby Creel, Associate Director of the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI), passed away on February 15th, 2010. The NM geospatial community, the WRRI, NMSU, and the state in general, lost a good friend, who was a truly helpful "do anything for you" kind of guy, as well as a skilled researcher and manager. He will be greatly missed. (more ...)
